Inspiring Our Sense of Wanderlust

Inspiring Our Sense of Wanderlust

Have you seen the Roman Colosseum ruins, the Sydney Opera House’s impressive sails, or London’s ancient castles? During this time of social distancing, the ladies of Charity Court, our memory care neighborhood, are visiting these sites and many more thanks to It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) person-centered technology.

Each week the elders take a different adventure to a new country. They create art projects and enjoy snacks that relate to the places they visited throughout that week, making this activity more than just something they watch – it’s an all-around cultural experience.

iN2L brings the world into our Charity Court community, providing an excellent tool for the staff to learn more about the elders and engage them in cognitive, sensory and tactile ways. The technology allows elders to use interactive screens and tablets to stimulate intellectual curiosity with easy access to the internet. iN2L is also used to stay connected with family and friends and view personal photos and videos that prompt joyful memories. It increases education, boosts moods and fosters communication with residents, their families and Nazareth Home staff.

The elders are connecting to the world in new and innovative ways. We may be isolated from the outside world, but we are going places we have never been, viewing stunning landscapes and majestic buildings, and seeing all that our beautiful world offers.

As we travel across the globe, we find peace, joy and happiness. Here’s to the next adventure!

“The most beautiful in the world is, of course, the world itself.” – Wallace Stevens

Give a Gift to Support Nazareth Home

Give a Gift to Support Nazareth Home

As the end of the year comes to a close, we enter a season of giving, a time to give back to those you love and the causes you support. This year, consider a gift to the Nazareth Homes Foundation.

It’s no secret that 2020 had been a year of challenges and uphill battles. As we continued to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, it was clear that we needed a fund to help support our staff and elders during this unprecedented time. The COVID-19 Relief Fund addresses the immediate and longer-term needs of our staff and elders. This fund helps to provide the following:

    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff
    • Technology like Theora Clear, which helps monitor the temperatures of each individual who enters our campuses
    • Additional staffing
    • Unexpected and unanticipated expenses due to COVID-19

If you would like to look at other ways to support Nazareth Home, visit our giving page to learn about other funds available. For example, our Sandra King of Excellence Fund provides tuition assistance for staff to further their education.

The impact your gift has on Nazareth Home is immeasurable. It’s an investment in each person that lives and works here. Your donation helps us sustain and continue our mission of person-centered care.

This holiday season, as you consider your year-end gifts, remember Nazareth Homes Foundation. Every gift matters.

Those wishing to contribute can:

    • Make a secure, tax-deductible online donation
    • Make a check payable to Nazareth Homes Foundation, include the name of the fund in the memo line. Mail to: 2000 Newburg Road Louisville, KY 40205.

Nazareth Home Offers Free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training Program

Nazareth Home Offers Free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training Program

If this year has taught the world anything, it is the power of health care. Now more than ever, the country and Louisville need kind, supportive individuals who are willing to step up and provide care to those in need. Nazareth Home has a long history of delivering compassionate person-centered care to the elderly and their families. This year, when most of the elderly population has had to distance from their loved ones, the relationships built between elders and Nazareth Home caregivers are incredibly essential.

With all of this in mind, now is a great time to think about a career as a CNA. Nazareth Home offers free (CNA) training to anyone interested in providing personal care to our elderly community. This program is an excellent opportunity for current Nazareth Home employees or anyone who would like to further their education and move toward a nursing career.

For those interested in becoming a CNA, the Nazareth training program is five weeks long and offered quarterly. Those in the program will receive hands-on clinical training with a nurturing instructor and will also work from online course materials such as virtual lectures, skills videos and practice tests. This program will earn participants three college credits and allow them to build more meaningful relationships with co-workers and Nazareth Home elders.

Once fully trained, those in a CNA position will assist a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) with elder care. A CNA with Nazareth Home will handle various responsibilities including, but not limited to, bathing, dressing and any other necessary activities involved in daily life. You can learn more about the benefits of becoming a CNA at Nazareth Home at nazhome.org/careers.

Amid a year that has unfortunately left many struggling, this program is a great way to quickly experience new mobility and pay it forward to a community in need of compassionate, quality care.

Interested parties should desire to serve and care for elders, hold a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED), and have the flexibility to work some evenings, nights and weekends. For more information, please contact Jenny Faught at 502-313-6150 or jfaught@nazhome.org.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program

COVID-19 Vaccine: Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program

On Friday, October 16, the White House announced the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program—a national vaccine distribution program for long- term care residents. The COVID-19 vaccine will likely become available in phases over the coming months, with long- term care communities being prioritized in the early stages of this process.

While this is good news for our elders, staff, and families we are cautiously planning as there are still many details to be finalized. Nazareth Home leaders have been actively engaged in conversations regarding the vaccination and will be ready to respond as soon as one is made available.

The last several months have been difficult for all of us, and the upcoming winter brings many unknowns. We are committed to continuing to provide the highest level of person-centered care possible. Our elders and staff are our priority, we will continue to do all we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. We are grateful for the understanding and patience our families have shown during this difficult time.

Nazareth Home staff stepping into elders’ shoes with person-centered virtual reality technology

Nazareth Home staff stepping into elders’ shoes with person-centered virtual reality technology

Those of us who have not experienced memory loss can’t understand Alzheimer’s from the perspective of a person living with the disease. It’s also hard to understand end-of-life circumstances without ever being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Yet our caregivers, nurses and staff face these challenges each day. While always compassionate and caring, there has not been a way to truly put our staff in the shoes of the elder faced with these issues, until now.

Recently, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth awarded a ministry grant to Nazareth Home. This grant funded the purchase of an immersive training platform from Embodied Labs. The software allows our staff to peer into the body and mind of someone confronted with aging issues like cognitive decline such as Alzheimer’s or an elder faced with a terminal prognosis.

Through the platform’s virtual reality experiences, our caregivers are immersed in the elders’ perspectives and conditions, helping them better understand the disease or circumstance. The Alzheimer’s training transports the staff into Beatriz’s life, a middle-aged woman, as she advances through a decade of Alzheimer’s disease. The end-of-life training embodies Clay, a 66-year-old veteran with stage IV terminal lung cancer, as he comes to terms with the reality of his diagnosis.

Through this training, our staff will learn what the elder is feeling and explore the physical, spiritual, and mental changes that may occur. This insight empowers our team to provide more effective and empathetic care. Knowing what to expect, how to relate, and how to respond allows us to communicate more clearly, support more confidently and serve with a greater purpose. Real understanding isn’t just about knowing how to care in certain situations; it’s about feelings. Those feelings are what enhance empathy and compassion.

At Nazareth Home, we focus on achieving outstanding person-centered, innovative and compassionate care. We encompass a holistic approach in our healing ministry, which includes social, spiritual and physical wellness. Our partnership with Embodied Labs’ will enhance our ministry by allowing us to step into someone else’s shoes and understand another person’s experience.

Understanding aging adults’ challenges through a first-person patient perspective builds upon our quality of care. With increased empathy, we will provide better emotional support to our elders and their family members, bringing another layer of excellence to our person-centered approach.
