Thank You from the Nazareth Home Foundation

Thank You from the Nazareth Home Foundation

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, the Nazareth Home Foundation would like to thank all of you who have supported our programs and facilities in 2021 through generous donations.

In September, we awarded eight team members with scholarships to various colleges/universities to support their continued professional growth. This funding came from our donors who stepped forward to support the Sandra King Education and Excellence Fund.

Thanks to the Kentucky Colonels, we added a new spa tub to Charity Court on our Highlands Campus, ensuring the ladies there can have peaceful and relaxing baths.

We’ve also been able to support our elders in special gift opportunities throughout the year, thanks to our many community partners that continue to show up and love on our elders.

These gifts mean so much to our organization and are part of what allows Nazareth Home to continue its mission. If you have questions on how to engage with our Foundation, please contact our Director of Development, Roberta Steutermann, at rsteutermann@nazhome.org.

As we close out this year, we are so thankful for your support and look forward to what 2022 will bring.

Nazareth Home Resident Anne Marie Currie Receives the Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Award

Nazareth Home is excited to announce Anne Marie Currie, a resident at the Highlands Campus, has received the Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Award from the University of Louisville Trager Institute.

This award recognizes adults who are 85 years or older and outstanding models of optimal aging. Individuals who receive this honor exhibit current involvement in one or more of the following areas: physical, spiritual, social, civic, and creative.

Mrs. Currie was a teacher for nearly 40 years, teaching a variety of subjects and topics. She is fluent in French and Spanish, which she used while teaching for Jefferson County Public Schools. At 91 years old, she is an artist who enjoys creating various drawings and art projects especially using watercolors.

“Mrs. Currie is most deserving of this award and is a role model on how to live as you age,” said Mary Haynes, Nazareth Home President/CEO. “She continues to teach art and art appreciation to others. She has also encouraged many groups to visit Nazareth Home and has enriched the community by doing so.”

When she learned she would be receiving this award, Mrs. Currie said, “As I age, I dare never to quit being me. I want to enjoy this life as much as I can and am willing and able to do so.”

This annual award is presented each September during Optimal Aging Month.

Volunteer at Nazareth Home

Volunteer at Nazareth Home

It takes a village, and that is most certainly the case at Nazareth Home. Our campuses thrive because of the selflessness and service of our volunteers. These special people help us provide the person-centered care we are known and loved for at both locations.

For the past year and a half, due to COVID-19, we had to halt the visits from our volunteers. However, we are finally able to welcome them back in a limited quantity. Our staff, elders and families have missed them and are happy to have their smiling faces back among our halls. Their contributions and commitments are invaluable, as they bring a whole extra layer of companionship and relationship opportunities for the elders.

At Nazareth Home, we offer multiple options for people to serve. We have volunteers for liturgical ministries who assist with our daily Mass. Liturgy volunteers are Eucharistic Ministers that help distribute communion or are lectors who proclaim the Word of God at Mass. They also assist with bringing the elders to and from Mass. Most of these volunteers spend about an hour per week at Nazareth Home.

Volunteers can also help transfer elders to and from activities, write cards or letters, craft, play games or assist at an event. They also help elders use technology such as an iPad or our It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) platform.

The activities volunteers come in as needed, and the time spent is as little or as much as they would like. It could be for an hour here or there or an entire afternoon a few days a week.

Currently, all volunteers must commit to taking a COVID-19 test and provide proof of vaccine.

Our volunteers are the backbone of many of the programs we offer at Nazareth Home. They’re our village. We are blessed to have them serve at Nazareth Home and are thrilled to welcome them back to our communities.

Celebrating Pastoral Care Ministry

Celebrating Pastoral Care Ministry

At Nazareth Home, we have an excellent pastoral care team that puts their whole heart into the care and love they provide to the elders at our campuses. We are excited to celebrate Pastoral Care Week and all our team does for the elders that live at our campuses.

Our pastoral care team at Nazareth Home believes in a person-centered care approach where we learn about the elders’ history, values, likes and dislikes. This type of care allows the team and nursing staff to have a three-dimensional view of the elders and more easily consider their care goals and address their spiritual and psychosocial needs.

A pastoral care team’s primary responsibility is to guide people into a different phase of life with their faith and spiritual practices intact. The team coordinates and often leads group meetings, is available for one-to-one ministry, and is on-call for end-of-life care and ministry to grieving families.

The pastoral care ministry focuses on being present, uplifting and attuned to the spiritual needs of the elders. We can provide peace, comfort, and compassion by offering a listening ear and attending to an individual’s spiritual preferences.

Nazareth Home’s pastoral care team attends Mass alongside the elders six days a week, providing sacramental planning and companionship to the dying and their families. Pre-Covid-19, our team also (hopefully, to return soon) planned and hosted wakes and funerals in our chapels for those who lived at Nazareth Home.

Studies suggest that spiritual support is vital in the well-being and quality of life in older adults and those nearing the end of life. Elders and their families choose Nazareth Home for our spiritual care as much as for our nursing care. The pastoral care team helps elders, regardless of their denominational background, express their values and spiritual needs and prepare for the future while also helping family

members and loved ones make decisions in the elders’ best interests and enjoy the precious time left at the end of life.

Thank you to our pastoral care teams at our Clifton and Highlands campuses. You help us live out our mission of being a compassionate and welcoming community providing health and wellness services with an intentional focus on hospitality and excellence. We depend on you and appreciate you each day.
